When you are in search of a new netbook and you happen to be in love with the color pink then I may have a Dell for you. Of course, while the candy pink coating is one nice aesthetic feature it should not be your deciding factor. After all, a good skin or case can make the cover of most models of netbooks pink for you. Lets put aside the candy colored coating and take a look at what will really matter in the long term. Lets look at the specs.

The Dell Mini Pink im1018-4033prp has an Intel® AtomTM N455 processor that runs at a speed of 1.66 GHz, which is fairly standard for a netbook. Its good for running the day-to-day web uses, but will not give you an amazing performance if you need to do something that is processor intensive. The system has a 250 GB hard drive, which should be more than enough for a device that streams and stores most of its data on the cloud. As long as you do not try to store your media library on this machine and install software you should be fine.

Now lets talk graphics. The screen resolution is 1024 x 600, which is not HD, but about as good as you can get on a netbook before you have to pay the piper for the higher resolution, that in most cases is just not worth it on a netbook. The graphics processor is a 1GB DDR3, Intel® NM10.

The total weight for this netbook is about 5 pounds. So it may not be good for long term carrying.

On the whole this system might be good for someone who is going to carry it only a limited amount of time. It is good for both work and play needs, as long as you are not a media hound. The notable exception is that if you are going to do the bulk of your media on Amazon, which is completely streaming so that it will not take up your hard drive space.

The cost for this machine is $364.99.

Many people argued--and still do--that the same could be said about netbooks. However, I'd reconsider those arguments because in reality, that's simply not the case. In many cases, getting a netbook over a tablet is really the way to go. For this argument, let's look at the ASUS Eee PC 1015PN-PU17-WT 10.1-Inch Netbook (White). I wrote about this netbook in the Best Netbooks of 2011 post and I think it's probably one of the best available right now.

We'll break this up into a few details.

External

There's nothing more frustrating than trying to write anything on a tablet. People realized that using the iPad for anything creative--such as writing a review of it--would take forever with the touch screen. Therefore, people developed keyboards for it. However, that's another cost. With the netbook, it comes with a screen a bit bigger than the iPad's and a keyboard built in. That means that you can use it.

Now, we stop for a second and yell, "But Jacob! It weighs 4 pounds while the iPad 2 weighs 1.3 pounds." I get it, the netbook weighs a little more, but we're strong people. We can carry a netbook and it won't hurt our arms. If your only purpose is light weight use, fine, get a tablet (and spend more money). But, if anything else matters, the netbook matters.

Let's continue...

Speed

It has the Intel Atom Core built in to it. The N550 is fast. But, let's not forget the RAM. It comes with a single gig of RAM, but if you want to spend a bit of money, you can buy a second gig and suddenly, you've got a pretty quick machine. The iPad doesn't have that much RAM. It's fast, but loading bigger things will take longer because it has fewer resources to work with. The netbook doesn't have that problem.

Storage and Storing

I say storage and storing because they're two different things. First and foremost, it has 250 GB of space. How much available space does an iPad have? 64GB. That's pretty pathetic in my opinion. But, the storing comes in because of the USB drives on the side. I can remove files from this device so much simpler than from an iPad. So, storing files is much simpler and more convenient. If you do anything creative--and not just play apps--you'll like that ability.

Cost

The ASUS Eee PC 1015PN-PU17-WT 10.1-Inch Netbook (White) costs only$345.99. The iPad 2 (and that's the smallest model) costs $499. Umm...What? I'm buying a device that only weighs a couple pounds less, spending more money and getting fewer available resources? AND! As a writer, I can't even compose on the iPad?

Look...I think the iPad is great. It's fun to sit on the train on my way to work and play with it. But, when I want to get some work done, I have to go with the netbook. It's stronger, faster and productivity is greater. But hey, that's just me.

Intel Atom N455, 1 GB DDR3 RAM, Huge Touchpad, Great Keyboard

Cons:

No dedicated graphics chipset

Bottom Line:

The Toshiba NB305-440 is an updated version of the Toshiba NB305-310 I reviewed back in April so the netbook is very similar to that model that I reviewed favorably; however, this model is updated with a few things that help make it even better including the Intel Atom N455 1.66 GHz processor (one of the latest) and the support for DDR3 RAM. Overall the Toshiba NB305-440 is a stellar netbook for it's $353.99 price and it continues the long standing tradition to offer a great keyboard and touchpad for maximum usability in a netbook. You can't go wrong with the Toshiba NB305-440 (see more about this model at Amazon.com). The full review is continued after the break.

Quick Product Specs:

Intel Atom N455 1.6 GHz, 1 GB DDR3 RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter (See Full Specs)

Full Review:

Design:

The netbook has soft rounded edges surrounding all sides of the netbook and is frost white on the exterior and interior. The frost white is offset by the chrome colored hinges and in the center of the chrome colored bar is the power button. I'm personally not a fan of the big chrome section as I believe it looks too bulky, but I love the rest of the design. The netbook sits at nearly 1.25 inches high (thanks partly because of the 6 cell battery bulge) so if you're looking for a thin and sleek design this won't be it. Beyond the size and my complaints about the chrome bar the netbook looks great.

Usability:

This is where the Toshiba NB305-440 truly shines - it has a great keyboard and roomy touchpad. It is the newer chiclet style keyboard which provides more space between each key to make it easier to type. This is the same keyboard style of every other Toshiba netbook I've reviewed and it's nice to see they didn't change it. They keyboard is very easy to type with and I was able to type at full speed in less than a couple minutes after adjusting from my desktop keyboard. The touchpad is very responsive and did I mention it's huge? Yes, Toshiba almost always has the biggest touchpad and it is very easy to surf the web and perform various functions on this netbook over some of it's competitors that skimp on the touchpad real estate.

The 1024 x 600 resolution is back again in this model and as I've said on numerous occasions before I think it's time we start seeing more of the higher resolution 1366 x 768 screens on current generation netbook models; however, if you plan to use your netbook like most people do (typing emails, papers, browsing the web, playing Facebook games etc. this isn't an issue). This netbook does feature a glossy screen so if you'd prefer a matte option instead I'd suggest you check out the comparably priced Samsung N230 I recently reviewed.

Battery Life:

The Toshiba NB305-440 gets about 8 hours of battery life which is more than enough for most users. If you absolutely need a higher battery life check out the netbook comparison grid for other 6 cell netbooks. The netbook is rated for 11 hours but I got about 8 hours of battery life which is to be expected (most manufacturers come up with this figure by using less brightness etc.).

Overall Performance:

Overall I think the Toshiba NB305-440 does everything better than it's predecessor in most places like performance and battery life; however, I would have still liked to see improved graphical performance and a higher resolution screen. The keyboard and touchpad are top notch in the industry and the build quality of this netbook is greater than most competiting netbooks. The only thing you really need to decide is if you do need better graphic capabilities and if you do I suggest looking for a netbook with Nvidia ION built in or a Broadcom HD card. If this doesn't matter to you then I highly recommend checking out Toshiba Mini NB305-N440 especially when the price is only $353.99 as well.

Pros:

Terrific design, Ultra Thin Chassis (1 inch), Great keyboard, Matte Screen

Cons:

No dedicated graphics chipset

Bottom Line:

The Samsung N230 was first made available in July and it has an ultra thin chassis of just 1 inch, a strong 7 hr battery life, great keyboard and matte screen. The only complaint I can have is the lack of any type of hardware based video support and this is more of a want than a complaint. Hands down this is one of the best Samsung netbooks I've ever reviewed. The best part is that it's only $330.79.

Quick Product Specs:

Intel Atom N450 1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter (See full specs)

Full Review:

Design:

The netbook is only 1 inch thick partly thanks to it's thin 3 cell battery but also due to it's slimmed down design. The netbook features a matte screen which makes it excellent for using outside and it also makes use of the newer chiclet style keyboard that looks great. The top lid does attract fingerprint smudges; however, that isn't enough of a deterrent for me to be too bothered over because the rest of the netbook looks so sleek and thin.

Usability:

The Samsung N230's keyboard is outstanding. It is the newer chiclet style keyboard which provides more space between each key and is 93% full size. I don't know why every netbook manufacturer hasn't adopted this layout because it's superb and continues to impress me in every netbook I use. It's very easy to type and I was able to type at full speed in less than a couple minutes of adjusting from my desktop keyboard. The touchpad is very responsive and another great feature of this netbook - I personally use the touchpad over an external mouse on almost every netbook that I buy so this is usually a deal breaker for me and fortunately the Samsung N230 failed to disappoint. The touchpad is sizeable and the accompanying buttons are also very responsive as well.

The 1024 x 600 resolution we've grown accustomed to seeing in previous netbooks is back again in the N230. I personally would like to see the higher resolution of 1366 x 768; however, I believe this will be a slow transition as netbooks begin to feature better graphic capabilities. As mentioned before, the netbook does feature a matte screen which makes the N230 an ideal choice for users looking for an indoor and outdoor computing machine.

Battery Life:

The Samsung N230 has a 3 cell battery; however, the small battery capacity packs a punch and provided an average battery life of about 7 hours. I think the battery life is more than sufficient because part of what I love so much about this netbook is it's sleek design. Without the smaller 3 cell battery we'd have a netbook that was much thicker instead of this stealthy 1 inch thick size instead. If you know you'll need a strong battery life than what the N230 provides than your decision is simple, but something with a 6 cell battery. I prefer to keep the Samsung the way it is with the smaller battery for the design's sake and reduction in weight.

Overall Performance:

Overall I think the Samsung N230 does several things right for only $330.79: the keyboard, design, matte screen, strong battery life (for a 3 cell) and solid build quality. There are just a couple things I would have liked to see changed with this netbook and that includes the 1024 x 600 resolution (give me 1366 x 768) and the lack of a dedicated graphics support option; however, these two "faults" could be considered more wants than necessity as no comparably priced netbook is offering them. The only thing you really need to decide is if you do need better graphic support or a stronger battery life. If you don't need these two than I recommend you buy the Samsung N230. If in the end you need more juice to get you through the day or stronger graphic support I suggest you look at some of the 10 inch options via our netbook comparison grid.

Pros:

Terrific design, Great keyboard

Cons:

Low battery life

Bottom Line:

The Lenovo X100e is an 11.6 inch business class netbook coming from the Thinkpad line and is currently priced at $514.95. The keyboard is terrific featuring the chiclet style keys with edges slightly rounded upwards on the edges prevent finger slipping and they contribute to one of the best netbook keyboards on the market. The performance in this netbook is much higher than average netbooks in part because of it's dual core 1.6 GHz AMD Turion processor; however, with the upcoming 11.6 inch netbooks featuring Nvidia ION 2 (even better graphics) it could be better to wait. The battery life is also a little underwhelming which clocked in at about 4.5 hours compared to other netbooks that can do around 8 hours - that being said, most 11.6 inch netbooks have lower battery life than their 10 inch counterparts. Overall the good things outweigh the bad and if you want to sacrifice a little battery life for a larger netbook this is a great option to investigate further.

Quick Product Specs:

AMD Neo 1.6 GHz Dual Core Processor, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Pro (see full specs)

Full Review:

Design:

The netbook is only 1 inch thick, and unlike most other netbooks the battery extends out the back about an inch instead of contributing to a bulge on the bottom. This is a welcome change and one I wish more netbook manufacturers adopted. The case of the netbook is the typical business black that Lenovo is known for in it's Thinkpad line so while I believe it lacks a bit of personality it still looks incredibly sleek. There are two sets of touchpad buttons (one set if you're using the regular touchpad and another if you're using the "eraser" style center mouse pointer). The island style keyboard looks spectacular and I'll get to how great it is in a later part of the review.

Usability:

The Lenovo X100e (like the Lenovo S10-3) has one of the best netbook keyboards I've ever laid my hands on. Lenovo designed a new island style chiclet keyboard that has raised edges on the sides of the keys to make it easier to prevent fingers from slipping off and hitting incorrect keys while typing. This keyboard feels incredibly expansive and it's a noticeable change using this 11.6 inch netbook over the 10 inch netbooks. Unlike it's smaller brother the Lenovo S10-3 - the X100e has a fantastic touchpad that is plenty large and easy to use (I'm a stickler for small touchpads and don't tolerate them). The improved components in this netbook (1.6 GHz dual core processor and 2 GB RAM) make this a very snappy netbook and it loads programs much faster than my old ASUS Eee PC 1008HA. This netbook features an 11.6 inch 1366 x 768 resolution screen and I was very impressed with the clarity. Perhaps this is because I'm so used to 1024 x 600 10 inch netbooks, but in either case the higher resolution screen is a very nice feature and what makes it even better is that it is a matte screen as well! I could see easily and without any glare when I took it outside and turned the brightness up.

Battery Life:

The Lenovo X100e has a 6 cell battery that provides the netbook an average battery life of about 4.5 hours. As I've said before, I would prefer to have seen a slightly higher battery life than that number, but most competing 11.6 inch netbooks fall in that range. When it comes to deciding whether you purchase this netbook or not you should just ask yourself if you prefer something a little larger with a lower battery life or can settle for something smaller (10 inch) in exchange for a longer battery life.

Overall Performance:

Overall I think the Lenovo X100e does a few things wonderfully for $514.95 Lenovo X100e available at Amazon.com: the keyboard, design, screen and solid build quality. The only thing you really need to decide is if 4.5 hours of battery life will be enough for you. I personally would have liked to see at least a couple extra hours, but if in the end you need more juice to get you through the day I'd look at some of the 10 inch options via our netbook comparison grid.

See more about the $515 Lenovo X100e available at Amazon.com

Bottom Line:

The Toshiba NB305 is a fantastic netbook available for $323.54. The keyboard is excellent and the touchpad is the largest I've seen on any netbook (save the Toshiba NB205) and I believe both of these features are crucial on a netbook. The NB305-310 also offers a strong battery life. I got 9 hours under normal use (web browsing, a little Hulu video watching, blogging etc.). The only downside I can say about the netbook is the fact that it uses Windows XP home. Some people won't consider this a downside and in fact that's partly why it has a lower price. There is another model, the NB305-N410, available with Windows 7 starter available for a little higher price at $372.54 if you prefer the newer operating system. Beyond that the Toshiba NB305 netbook is a solid machine and one worth of the title I gave it back in January - best netbook of CES.

See all Toshiba NB305 netbook models

Full review continued after the break

Full Review:

Quick Product Specs:

Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter (see full specs)

Design:

The netbook is less than 1 inch tall in the front (tapering) and in the back it is a little under 1.5 inches high after the battery bulge of the 6 cell battery, so it's a relatively thin netbook. There is a tapering around the outside of the netbook on both the top case and bottom case. The lid has a glossy black finish that is sadly a haven for finger prints. Inside the netbook the all black theme continues throughout the entire inside of the netbook. As was mentioned before, the touchpad is huge on this netbook at 3 inches wide and just over 1.5 inches high:

Usability:

I'm satisfied with the keyboard on the Toshiba NB305; however, I still believe the future for keyboard design is in island style keys with slightly raised edges (i.e. Lenovo S10-3). With that said the keyboard is still completely usable and it makes up for an area the Lenovo S10-3 falls well short of - touchpad size. Ever since the Toshiba NB205 the netbooks made by Toshiba have offered huge and roomy touchpads. Combine the touchpad with the keyboard and you have one of the most effective 10 inch netbooks around.

The screen resolution found in this model is 1024 x 600 and again as I've mentioned in past reviews I'd love to see netbook manufacturers move away from 1024 x 600 and to instead go with 1366 x 768 instead. If you need a higher resolution 10 inch netbook look at the Sony Vaio W or ASUS Eee PC 1005PR; however, both of these models are more expensive.

Battery Life:

The Toshiba NB305-310 has a 6 cell battery that provides a manufacturer rated 11 hours battery life; however, I found this number to be more close to 9 hours of battery life under normal usage. I rarely get the same target battery life a manufacturer gets, but the key point here is that even if the usage you see is somewhere between 9 and 11 hours that should be more than adequate.

Performance:

As expected you'll get typical performance from this netbook. You'll be able to play farmville, watch YouTube, use MS office suite, and just about any other tasks you can think of besides playing intense PC games and HD video viewing. I ran PC Mark 05 tests on this netbook and got 1389 which is typical of most netbooks (without Nvidia ION inside) so there weren't any surprises here.

Overall Performance:

Overall I believe the Toshiba NB305 is a worthy netbook in low $320's price range. The keyboard is sufficient, the touchpad is huge, and it has a great battery life. The only complaint some shoppers may find is the decision to go with Windows XP for the OS. This saves you some money by bringing the total cost down to $323.54, but if you really need Windows 7 there are three colors to choose from all priced around $370. The Toshiba NB305-N310 is only available in black though. I still believe the Toshiba Mini NB305 is one of the best netbooks around especially after spending an in depth amount of time with it for this review.

Bottom Line:

The Samsung N150 is a great netbook in the $329 price range. The keyboard is excellent, the touchpad is roomy, it has an excellent matte screen and it is relatively thin. The only real complaint I can find with it is the battery life. It receives an estimated 7 hours; however, I got closer to 6 hours. Ideally I would have liked to see 2 - 3 extra hours of battery life based on the price of some of it's close competitors i.e. ASUS Eee PC 1001P. With that said, I still appreciate the Samsung N150 and it's also available in a wide array of colors to choose from as well. My demo unit is blue and it's available for only $329, see all the Samsung N150 colors available here. I'll provide more details about the netbook in the rest of this review continued after the break.

Quick Product Specs:

Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter (see full specs)

Full Review:

Design:

The netbook is less than 1 inch tall in the front (if you count the tapering) and in the back it is a little under 1.5 inches high, so when you factor in the battery bulge of the 6 cell battery it's a relatively thin netbook. The outer shell on the lid has a soft blue matte color that is conveniently finger proof resistant. Inside the netbook we see a flat black color outlining the keyboard and screen bezel. All of the corners are rounded and tapered ever so slightly which brings it all together in a nice design package (especially for the price)

Usability:

I'm satisfied with the keyboard on the Samsung N150 and about the only keyboard I believe tops it is the Lenovo S10-3 keyboard (the combination of island style and raised edges make it the best in my book), but that isn't said to diminish what the Samsung N150 has to offer. In fact, I believe it has one of the best keyboards on a netbook priced under $350 and when it comes to netbooks I believe two of the most important components include the keyboard and the touchpad both of which Samsung excels at. Samsung's touchpad is sizable at 1.5 inches by 2.5 inches and it even includes support for multi touch gestures. I had a little trouble getting the landscape to portrait gesture to work well, but I'm certain that's because of the sticker that I left on over the touchpad (it's a demo unit and I try to remove as little stuff as possible from them).

The screen resolution found in this model is still 1024 x 600 by default; however, you can change the resolution up to 1024 x 768 and even 1152 x 864. Both of these options scrunch the text down but if you really need the screen real estate in a bind it's good to know you have it. In past reviews I have admitted I'd love to see netbook manufacturers move away from 1024 x 600 and to instead go with 1366 x 768 instead, but it's still a very slow transition. If you absolutely need a higher resolution check out my review of the Sony Vaio W just remember you'll pay $120 more for it than the Samsung N150.

Battery Life:

The Samsung N150 has a 6 cell battery that provides a manufacturer rated 7 hours battery life; however, I found this number to be more close to 6 hours of battery life and as I mentioned at the onset of this review I would have liked to see 2 - 3 extra hours worth of battery life in this netbook.

Performance:

As expected you'll get typical performance from this netbook. Sure you'll be able to play farmville, watch YouTube videos, use the MS office suite, do light video editing and just about any other tasks you can think of minus intense HD gaming and HD video viewing. I ran PC Mark 05 tests on this netbook and got 1421 which is typical of most netbooks (without Nvidia ION inside) so there weren't any surprises here.

Overall Performance:

Overall I believe the Samsung N150 is a worthy netbook in the $329 price range. The keyboard is excellent, the touchpad is roomy, it has an excellent matte screen; however, as I mentioned earlier the battery life is where it falls a few hours too short in my mind. Comporably priced netbooks over 9 - 10 hours and the Samsung N150 offers just 7 hours. I still appreciate the Samsung N150 as an entire package and it's also available in a several colors to choose from as well. My demo unit is blue and is available for only $329, but you can see all the Samsung N150 colors available here.
Bottom Line:

The ASUS Eee PC 1001P is the budget entry in ASUS' netbook arsenal and it came out swinging to take out the competition. The overall build quality and specs in this netbook can meet (and sometimes surpass) those found in more expensive netbooks. At $330 for the ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17 and $299 for the Asus Eee PC 1001P-MU17 the balance between performance and price is superb. The only place I can find some fault in is the keyboard, which is a near copy of the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA (a model I still own) but I am able to type on it without issue - I just prefer the island style now. If you're looking for a netbook that won't break the bank - Buy the ASUS Eee PC 1001P.

Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter (see full specs)

Full Review:

Design:

The netbook is 1 inch high in the front and moving to the back it raises to 1.5 inches high, but this height increase is of course due to the typical battery bulge of the 6 cell battery. The outer shell on the lid sports an interesting diamond style lid that looks great while also managing to be fingerprint proof. Inside the netbook we see the style continued with the exception of the touchpad which moves away from their recent design stylings of a dimpled touchpad and to a more traditional style smooth surface touchpad. This move is not missed as I found the touchpad more easy to use than that of my ASUS Eee PC 1008HA which makes use of the dimpled touchpad style.

Usability:

I'm satisfied with the keyboard on the ASUS Eee PC 1001P, but I would have preferred an island style keyboard instead. I believe these are the best to type on, but that's not to say I don't think the keyboard on the ASUS Eee PC 1001P can't do the job - it can. The keyboard is the exact same as the one found on the older ASUS Eee PC 1008HA that I still own and have little issue typing with. As I mentioned earlier the touchpad on this netbook is both large and easy to use which is crucial to a successful netbook. The recently reviewed Lenovo S10-3 would have had my full recommendation to buy had it not been hampered by a puny touchpad. ASUS gets this right with a touchpad that is 1.5 inches by 2.5 inches. The resolution found in this model is still 1024 x 600 which I have admitted in the past I'd love to see netbook manufacturers move away from and to instead go with 1366 x 768 instead. If you absolutely need a higher resolution check out my review of the Sony Vaio W. The netbook also features a physical button allowing you to switch between various performance modes for the netbook. You will see a slight difference in speed when using multiple programs on the low power setting compared to the super high performance mode so it's nice to have the option to easily switch when your computing situation demands it.

Battery Life:

The Lenovo S10-3 has a 6 cell battery that provides a manufacturer rated 11 hours battery life; however, I found this number to be more close to 8.5 to 9 hours of battery life. This is still a huge number for battery life and it's one of the highest numbers in the netbook space and found in a budget netbook! To say I'm pleased would be an understatement.

Overall Performance:

Overall I think the ASUS Eee PC 1001P is one of the best netbooks I've seen in 2010 specifically because of it's amazing battery life, great design and low price. The model I reviewed runs for $329 at Amazon ($10 off MSRP) is also available in black for the same price. There is a model which features slightly trimmed down specs which I would still recommend buying if you're really trying to save your money. It is available in white for $299.99 and at the time of this review publishing the black model is on sale for $289!.
Pros:

Terrific design, Great keyboard (98% full size), Excellent bundled software

Cons:

Small Touchpad

Bottom Line:

The Lenovo S10-3 is a great improvement over the S10-2 in regards to both the design and the functionality of the keyboard. The built in Quick Start function and terrific Veriface software strike high notes for it's built in software. Sadly, the key area the S10-3 falls short in is the touchpad. Because the touchpad and buttons are part of one single combined unit the usable surface area of the touchpad is even smaller than you expect (see the video above to get a better idea of what I'm saying). If you use the netbook with a mouse this isn't an issue, but I believe most users probably don't use mice with their netbooks. I believe the small touchpad holds the S10-3 back from greatness in the mid range netbook market priced at $350. I would look at other options before setting your sites on this netbook unless you plan to rarely use the touchpad.

Quick Product Specs:

Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter (see full specs)

Full Review:

Design:

The netbook is only 1 inch thick, but near the back of the unit the 6 cell battery adds a little more height to the unit (nothing more than a typical battery bulge though). The top of the unit displays an eye pleasing checkerboard design that is fingerprint proof. Inside the netbook we see a brushed style that adds to the overall pleasing aesthetics of the unit. The island style keyboard looks lovely and I'll get to how great it is in a later part of the review, but here we get our first look at my major complaint about the netbook - it's touchpad.

Usability:

The Lenovo S10-3 has one of the best netbook keyboards I've laid my hands on. Lenovo designed a new island style chiclet keyboard that has raised edges on the sides of the keys to make it easier to prevent fingers from touching incorrect keys while typing. This keyboard is massive on a 10 inch netbook coming in at 98% full size. It just looks and feels incredible, it's too bad that this big keyboard comes at a price - small touchpad. The usable space on the touchpad is 2.75 inches wide by 1 inch high. Clearly the width isn't an issue, but in this case the height is. I didn't measure based on the physical size of the touchpad instead I measured based on where the touchpad stops responding to my finger (which is right where the dots are on the touchpad). So that's why we're stuck with this small touchpad. I truly wish the touchpad were just .3 inches taller even (1.5 inches is what the Sony Vaio W has), but sadly it isn't. If you use this netbook with a mouse everything is amazing because then you don't have to worry about the touchpad but you still get a huge wonderful keyboard.

The netbook does feature the new Splashtop 2.0 which allows you to customize the experience you receive when using the Quick Start feature. Quick Start allows you to boot to a separate OS in under 10 seconds to access email, skype, pandora, CNN and other various applications that you can change out. Back again is Lenovo's Veriface software which allows you to login to your computer with your face.

Battery Life:

The Lenovo S10-3 has a 6 cell battery that provides the netbook an average battery life of 7 hours which I am inclined to agree with based on light browsing / blogging. At this price I'd like to see a battery life that comes into the double digits like so many models offered by ASUS (i.e. 1005PE), but it's still a good number.

Overall Performance:

Overall I think the Lenovo S10-3 does a few things wonderfully for $350: the keyboard, design (except the touchpad), built in software and solid build quality. If you plan to use the netbook with a mouse frequently then you will love this netbook. If you don't plan to use a mouse then I suggest looking at other alternatives first.

Pros:

Roomy keyboard, Clean design, Large touchpad, Good HD video playback, Strong software bundle

Cons:

Bottom gets hot, Slow boot time, Shorter battery life than other netbooks, Broadcom chip doesn’t improve Flash playback (yet), Below-average performance

Bottom Line continued after the break

Bottom Line:

They said that the HP Mini 210 offered one of the best keyboards in it's class along with an HD screen at a reasonable price (Sony Vaio W also offers an HD screen). If you don’t need HD capabilities, for $85 less you can get an ASUS Eee PC 1001P, which also has an excellent keyboard, performs marginally better, and lasts about 2 hours longer on battery. In the $380ish price range they prefer the Toshiba Mini NB305 because of its better ergonomics and cooler running temperatures. The Toshiba NB305 also happens to be what I named as the best netbook of CES. I'll add that the HP Mini 210 comes in a TON of different configurations so be sure to browse our netbook comparison database to sort through the various models and prices.

Quick Product Specs:

Intel Atom N450 1.66 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Starter see full specs

Note: I'll update this review with more of my own impressions if HP sends me out a Mini 210, but they're notorious for never having enough demo models to send out.
