New Intel Netbook Chips Detailed
Intel has officially announced their new Atom based chipsets for netbooks:
Pine Trail series with support for DDR3 RAM
These chips have been covered on this blog before and in fact I thought they were already officially announced but we can just chock this up as another poorly kept secret. The new Intel Atom N455 and Intel Atom N470 chips clock in at 1.66 GHz and 1.83 GHz. The Intel Atom N450 is the current dominant chip of choice which also is clocked at 1.66 GHz so as you can tell there isn't really anything different here other than support for DDR3 memory.
The Acer Aspire One 533 discussed yesterday is the first of many netbooks that will release this year with the new chips.
Pine Trail Dual Core
We will begin to see netbooks with dual core Intel Atom chips later this year. This new chip is a 1.5 GHz dual core processor and will be called the Intel Atom N550. The ASUS Eee PC 1015n is the first netbook announced that will use this chip and is due out later this year.
Canoe Lake
This was already discussed, but this new chipset allows for devices to be thermally cooled (no need for fans) while at the same time still packing a substantial performance punch.
