Lenovo Ideapad S12 ION Plays Crysis and more

Lenovo recently sent me a Lenovo Ideapad S12 with Nvidia ION (this specific model) and in addition to publishing a full review tomorrow I thought I'd spend some time testing just how powerful the netbook is thanks to the Nvidia ION chipset.

    Lenovo Ideapad S12 Plays Crysis:

This first video shows how the Ideapad S12 handles the game Crysis. As I recall, about two years ago this was one of the most system demanding games out. I'm not a PC gamer and I wasn't sure what else to test so this is what I tried. In any case, the video is fairly long but it's still very surprising to see a netbook running a game as intense as Crysis:

Flash 10 vs Flash 10.1 on video:

The following video is a before and after sequence that shows how the Nvidia ION can greatly improve the viewing of Flash HD content online. In the older versions of Flash the CPU was the component that was responsible for Flash and because the Intel Atom processor is so weak the video would be understandably choppy. However, since they released another Flash version 10.1 it allows the load to be taken off the processor (and in this case) placed on the Nvidia ION chipset. The results you'll have to see for yourself:

The results are pretty astonishing. I'll have more on this netbook when I publish the review tomorrow. If you're already sold feel free to buy it.

    2. [...] If you’ve ever watched Flash video on a standard Netbook you’ll know it can sometimes be a torturous process, especially with anything approaching HD content.  Thankfully with it’s last update to 10.1, Flash now allows much of the load that was previously on the CPU to be taken up by the GPU, should you have one available.  NetbookReviews have a before-and-after comparison of the difference this can make on a Lenovo Ideapad S12 with ION graphics.  Streaming an HD show from Hulu is silky-smooth with the ION taking over from the small CPU, and they even manage to play a game of Crysis – something my desktop still struggles with.  Read the full story here. I think its a bit disingenuous to say that “Ion can play Crysis” Yea, sure, it can run it. But I don’t think the experience is what one would call enjoyable.
