Google Announces Chrome OS – Available on netbooks in 2010

In a story that's been around for as long as search was synonymous with Google I've heard tale of a potential Google OS and just maybe the next real threat to Microsoft (Apple being the first). Well today it is official. In a post on Google's official blog they've announced the Google Chrome OS which is set to be available on netbooks in the later half of 2010.

This new OS is separate from Google Android. Here's an excerpt from the post outlining more details:

"Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Android was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks. Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google."

This is also a particularly interesting piece:

"People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up."

Could we see a true instant on full featured OS? Time will tell, but it's something Microsoft hasn't been able to do in the past 20+ years perhaps but if there were one company I believe could truly do it - my money would be on Google.

Very exciting stuff indeed. Be sure to read the full article over at the official Google Blog.

Chrome OS would be very competitive on Microsoft operating systems. I was thinking that one day, Google would launch an Operating system that would complete with Windows XP or Vista. Google and Microsoft would compete head to head now that Microsft launched its Bing search engine.

Chrome OS is based on Linux and is only available for Netbooks. I wonder if Google would make an OS that would compete with Windows XP or Windows 7.
