Samsung N510 - will you buy it?
I heard about this netbook the other day and how it's supposed to come with the Nvidia ION chipset and some better graphics capabilities. Anyone looking to buy this netbook when it comes out?

First Choice ..... except for...
....the price! I wanted an NC10, but ended up with the Wind U100 because of price. I didn't want to spend nearly as much as my 17" laptop costed me!
The Wind was an opened box and cost me under $300 and was well-worth every penny! No problems, so the open box isn't an issue either!
Samsung netbooks looked very promising though. I'll continue to 'follow' what they are doing and coming out with because i know that they produce very capable machines!!

Samsung netbooks offer great aesthetics but they are priced way too high. I am a firm believer that $399 should be the maximum price for netbooks as they are companion PCs. Most everyone who is purchasing a netbook already has a primary notebook or desktop unit and just want a secondary, inexpensive computer for portable internet usage.
The Nvidia ION platform will be nice when it comes out here in the next few months but it is going to be priced way too high. Just to give you an idea, Lenovo has a 12" netbook with an Atom N270 processor and GMA 950 that is going for $449. No one knows how much the ION option is going to cost but it will more than likely be another $100 tacked onto the price.
Either way, expect early ION netbooks to carry a high price since the technology will be new (it won't really be new due to it basically be a re-branded Nvidia 9400M). It may take a full year before ION netbooks come down to the $300-$400 price range.
I think it is strange that netbooks are taking steps back in terms of price. There was a time when every netbook manufacturer was aiming to release $250-$300 models. Now it seems that $399 is the average price for new models from Gateway, Acer, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, HP, and Samsung.

I think I tend to agree with you on the price range maximum of $399. I personally paid about $409 for my Asus Eee PC 1008HA but I think that $400+ barrier caused the 1008HA to perform worse than I expected it would.
In any case - getting back to the Samsung N510 - I need to see more specs before I make any decisions.

Curious About NC 10
I was going to settle on the NC10, but then price became an issue. I couldn't find it for under $300.00. I'll look into it when I'm ready to change though. I note that it got the highest rating of one of the netbook review sites that I visited. I'm still very curious about the NC10. Anyone here using one?

Just saw this thread again... I would recommend not waiting for it if you need a netbook now.

Well, Samsung let the price out today: $599. Is anyone going to buy it for that high price? People would be better off getting a notebook for $599. A notebook would give someone a dual-core AMD processor, 4GB of RAM, at least a 250GB hard drive, and an ATI graphics solution that would put the ION (which is basically a GeForce 9400M) to shame (such as the ATI HD 3200).

I like the specs and the build quality of the N510, however, I would hold off on buying a Samsung netbook until you've investigated the health implications of nano silver laced keyboards. There are growing concerns about the potential health risks that nano silver poses to humans and the enviroment. Friends of the Earth and other groups have also voiced concerns. On the flip side of the coin some argue that Nano Silver has the potential to kill bacteria without causing any harm to humans.

I went to the FOE site and found the following:
"Scientific evidence suggests silver, and in particular nano-silver, is toxic and may be detrimental to human health." and "If there is no data on the dangers, then these products should not be on the market."
Do you have any links to evidence so I can investigate the health implications? The FOE site did not publish the scientific evidence nor link to it.
Edit: Here is a link and here and here and here and this database. Of course, check it for its science accuracy. Apparently nano-silver is not just used on keyboards. It is used in socks as a fungicide, in washing machines for whatever cleaning purpose and other non-medical uses.
Frankly, I never noticed before that I had a keyboard hazard but the nano-silver marketing is there for those who desire it.

Alas, I don't have any more data than the links you've unearthed yourself. I think it's nonsense to suggest silver itself is dangerous, it's been used as a currency in silver bars and coins for thousands of years. I think it's the tiny nature of the nano particles. They are so small perhaps they could slip through the skin via the keyboard and over time be harmful. If in doubt I'd look at another netbook without a nano silver laced keyboard.
