I am not sure about Chris but Asus seems to be king (or queen) of netbooks with long battery lives. Aside from coming with the craptacular Windows 7 Starter, the Eee PC 1005PE-PU17-BK and its 14 hour battery life is hard to argue with. That translates to over 10 hours of real world usage too.
I laughed when I looked at the Amazon.com pages for that netbook though. Scroll down to where it shows a picture of the Windows 7 Starter "desktop." Funny thing is that the start bar is translucent which means that Aero is running. Strange as Windows 7 Starter does not have Aero.
Anyway, I think you would be fine in going with an Asus if battery life was your main concern along with capacity. The 1005PE-PU17-BK is a little expensive but the 250GB hard drive, small form factor, and 10+ hours of real world usage make it the battery lover's dream. There are other Asus netbooks that get long battery lives as well. I think you would be fine with any Asus rated for at least 9 hours. Asus offers nice build quality and now you can easily upgrade the RAM of these units.
Aside from Windows 7 Starter, my only real complain regarding Asus Eee PC netbooks (with 10" screens) is that they use poor resolutions. You will have to constantly scroll when viewing web pages, writing documents, etc. 1366X768 is a much better resolution for web browsing but I guess the Asus Eee PC's can't have everything.
