Default Splashtop 2.0 Hands On

Splashtop has a new 2.0 version out and it adds in some additional features worth checking out. For those of you that are unfamiliar with Splashtop it's basically a way to boot into a separate instant on operating system faster than if you were to go straight into Windows. So if you want to [...]

Sounds, in general, like a neat idea...booting in under 3 seconds. But the person at the booth didn't describe any features. None.

Can you elaborate on exactly what operating system(s) are installed? Why you would boot to multiple OSes on a netbook?

For example, the video seems to show a non-MS Windows operating system. If that is true, then this device breaks into a whole new market where the OS is not Microsoft (which is fine). So what features does this non-MS operating system provide? What browsers and applications run on it? Etc.

DeviceVM Announces Splashtop 2.0, The World?s First Customizable Instant-On Operating System - Splashtop Instant-On Desktop from DeviceVM alludes that this is a proprietary, non-MS Windows OS (which is fine...just like Apple's OS) but seems to provide 0 support for applications that you would download and install (Firefox, iTunes, MS Office, OpenOffice, Photoshop, AOL IM, etc)...the OS (I call it an OS but technically it does not seem to be an OS due to it's lack of services) seems to be basically an entirely web-based platform where the device simply surfs the web.

Anyway, since you were there, I'd love to hear more about what it actually does and does not do/provide.

-Eric
