Default Sony VAIO W available for pre-order

The Sony VAIO W is now available for preorder on Amazon. You can find it in pink or in brown for $499.99. Oddly, white is "out of stock" although I think that may just be a mistake. The major disappointment here is the 2.5 hours battery life being advertised. I hope real would tests get at [...]

$499 and it gets 2.5 hours on a single charge? Is this thing made out of white gold or platinum? It looks like Sony is going beyond the Apple approach by charging a really high premium for their brand. I can go purchase a budget Acer notebook with a dual-core processor for the same price and it would be able to last for 3.5 hours on a single charge.

I really think that Sony is shooting themselves in the foot with this netbook.

2.5 hours? Is this a joke?

A netbook implies portability not being tethered to a charger. It must be a mistake...somebody needs to be fired.

Too true. Perhaps real world tests will prove it's better?

Or prove it to be worse. Sony has never really been solid with their battery life estimates for their devices. They never came out with an official statement but they said that the PSP 1000 (which was the very first PSP model) would get about 4-5 hours of game play. They were wrong. Some of their estimates for their Walkman devices have also been wrong.

So Sony has either learned from their mistakes and is using a conservative number for 2.5 or they are acting as usual (I think this is what is going on due to the high price) and people will be getting about 1.75-2 hours of real world usage.

I have to admit that I would have dumped my five month old ASUS 1000HE four months ago if it had not been for the 6-7 hour battery life. I finally discovered all the PC software that I could use for my personal interests and the all-day computer became a reality for me.
