Default Windows 7 and MSI U-100

Does the MSI U-100 allow Windows 7 to be installed? And if I don't like it is there a way I can go back to the way it was set up at the factory?

Thanks,

Good questions!! I don't think i want to move to 7 (and pay for it...even at 50% off!), but i'll be following the answers to learn more!

The reason I ask is that you can use Windows 7 free up until March 2010. If I like it I may upgrade and if I don't I'll turn the netbook back to it's original factory setup.

Pretty much all netbooks allow for the installation of Windows 7 and you can get them back to factory standards so long as you don't remove the restoration partition on their hard drives.

I have not had any experience with installing Windows 7 on an MSI netbook (I have not had any experience with an MSI netbook in general) but, just by judging from the specs, it looks like your U-100 can run Windows 7 just fine. You may want to check MSI's website to make sure that their software is Windows 7 compatible though (ie the software run within Windows).

Thanks ThisIsNot. If MSI's netbook comes with Windows XP do you know if there is anything else that I should be aware of? Can I assume that if it runs Windows XP that it should be able to run W7?

I don't think there is anything else that you need to be aware of. Just remember to leave the restoration partition alone as that contains your factory install files. Every netbook I have ever used has one of these partitions so I am just assuming that your MSI netbook has one as well.

From my experience, Windows 7 runs just a tad slower than Windows XP on N270/GMA 950 netbooks with 1GB of RAM. You may not notice a difference though. It definitely isn't like going from Windows XP to Vista. I haven't had issues with Windows 7 on any of the netbooks I have. In fact, Windows 7 had built-in drivers for every component of each netbook. The only thing is that the software the comes pre-installed may not be compatible with Windows 7. I know that MSI includes facial recognition software with their netbooks, that may not work with Windows 7. Just check MSI's website to see what software works with Windows 7 as it might be crucial to your needs.

I've been dual booting Win XP and Win 7 on my Asus Eee PC 1008HA with no problems. I wrote a quick guide on how to install Windows 7 that I recommend you check out though:

Install Windows 7 in 2 Easy Steps

Let us know if you have any problems installing it

And retweet the post if it helped you

Thanks Chris,

One of these days when I'm awake at 3:00 Am and can download files at will, I'll go pick up Windows 7 and the ISo program(There is no limit between 3-6 AM) . I am on satellite and am limited by the amount of downloads I can do in 24 hours. When I run over my limit, they slow my connection to a crawl!

Beth

Stay away from satellite!

Ugh. I remember getting internet from Dish Network for all of 2 weeks. They limited me to 5MB of downloads (and 2MB of uploads), that is MB and not GB, per 24 hours except during certain hours of operation. I could connect at a solid 1MB/s for download speed but it would take me 5 seconds to go over my limit. I didn't realize that there was this limit until I hooked my Xbox 360 up to the connection. I signed into Xbox Live and then my internet was turned off. Signing into Xbox Live was enough to fill my quota for the day.

I then moved and have been getting an optical connection from Qwest. Still, I can feel for you. I think that Dish has since changed their internet plan but it used to be terrible.

I am just waiting for cable to come to my neighborhood. My only other option is a phoneline connection. Our neighborhood isn't large enough for cable to be willing to come in. We are hopeful that this will happen soon.

I can't wait to be able to wave good-bye to satellite!!

Beth

I pay through the tooth for it too! That's what kills me! And did you know that the internet companies got a tax break a few years back with the agreement that they would have high speed connections up and running in exchange. They took the tax cut and ran without upholding their end of the bargain! Do you think our government is there for US? Don't be a fool! Government of business, by business and FOR business! Yup, you got it!
