yeah, the winter can be tough on the uninitiated, but there's plenty of ways to make the most of it.
August-November is still decent weather.
I gotta be honest, I live in thes outhtowns near the lake, but I still attach myself to the city of Buffalo because no one knows where Angola, NY is
A couple of buffalo websites to check out to get better acquainted with the city:
Artvoice: Buffalo's #1 Newsweekly - good for learning about current events to check out as well as learning about the arts scene and local news
Buffalo Rising | Your Guide to Buffalo NY News, Arts, Events & Buffalo Restaurants - good for local news and updates
The Buffalo Range, where the Buffalo fans roam! - a good sports forum for Buffalo sports as well as local and national news forums
Free Concerts Buffalo and WNY 2009 Festival, Event and Concert Calendar Schedule for Buffalo NY - a good compilation of Buffalo festivals and concerts
things to check out right away:
Shakespeare in the park (Delaware Park..free, bring a picnic basket with a preferred beverage and snacks)
the waterfront... check out the Miss Buffalo. $15 bucks for a 2 hour tour of the Niagara River and adjacent waterfront attractions. They have a happy hour tour where you can have drinks on board and meet people local to the city
Check out a Buffalo Bisons game at Coca Cola Field if their season is still going on by the time you get there. They suck, but its still a good time to see some summer baseball.
Niagara Falls...what the hell, it's not Buffalo but it's close eonugh.
Niagara Falls Tours & Attractions | Niagara Falls State Park specifically check out Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds. If you're into hiking or what not, check out Goat Island, which is right near the Falls.
Outdoors stuff:
-Disc Golf. We have several courses in the area. Grand Island has a beautiful course, Chestnut Ridge on Orchard Park has a nice one. My favorite is Emery Park in SOuth Wales, NY.
-Skiing. Lots of good skiing. Holiday Valley and Kissing Bridge are local favorites. Chestnut Ridge Park also offers sledding hills in the winter.
-Hiking and Camping. Zoar Valley, Allegheny State Park and Letchworth State Park are all beautiful destinations to get lost in nature.
-Ralph Wilson Stadium. Just go for the tail gating experience. It's pretty cool. My suggesting is go to Pinto Ron's spot. He's the guy who grills all his food on the hood of his old Ford Pinto. It's something else entirely.
-Canada. Yeah, we're right near Canada.
-Wineries. This is wine country. Either hit up Niagara couty, or the southern Tier, or trek over to the Finger Lakes for some good sweet, WNY (Western New York) Wine.
-In the city itself, you might as well check out the strip. Chippewa st. has some decent clubs. The Elmwood Village and Allentown is a little more artsy,
I prefer Hertel Ave. for drinks when i make my way to the city.
-Wings. First try Anchor Bar on Main St. and then try Duff's and compare. You may like one or the other.
-Pizza. Le Nova.
-Beer. Pearl St. Brewery.
If you're into art, you can also try out the Burchfield Penny museum or the Albright-Knox museum.
We also have a naval park right on the waterfront, as well as a Science Museum and the Buffalo Zoo. The Buffalo Historical Society has a great Pan American Expo (1901) exhibit. Buffalo, NY was one of the biggest and most prosperous cities at the turn of the last century.
Anything else, just ask.
It can get somewhat boring during the winter, unless you know how to take advantage of the season...winter sports, ice fishing, Sabres games, checking out restaurants.
good luck at UB!! Take the light rail once in a while to downtown, it's kind of cool.
