Default HP coming out with new netbooks

HP is coming out with a couple of netbooks. They have an 11.6" not-a-netbook netbook packing an Intel CULV processor, 1366X768 display resolution, and presumably an Intel GMA 4500MHD IGP solution. It will be known as the hP dm1, they are technically classifying it as an ultraportable notebook but we all know that this is really a netbook with HD video capabilities. A dm3 variation of the dm1 is also coming out. It has the same specs except that HP will pair a 13.3" LCD panel with it and offer a less expensive AMD Neo processor configuration.

They also plan on releasing a new Mini 201 netbook but its specs are currently not know. An HP Mini 311 netbook will also be coming out. It will feature an 11.6" 1366X768 LCD panel, Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and it will pack the Nvidia ION platform.

All of these are expected to come out in October 22nd alongside Window 7's release. The only thing is that none of these can technically be classified as netbooks. Why? Microsoft's Windows 7 definition of a netbook has a maximum size screen of 10 inches. This means that these will likely run Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Windows 7 Starter. HP also won't be able to market them as being netbooks.

That brings me to another point. What is wrong with companies these days? HP, Asus, Acer, Gateway, and others are trying to stay as far away from the netbook label as possible even though their products are in fact netbooks. Look at the Gateway model with an 11.6" screen and 1.2GHz AMD Athlon64 processor. Due to the amount of RAM is has (2GB), it can't be a netbook if it is running either Windows XP or Windows 7. I don't understand all of these not-a-netbook netbooks that are coming out. They really don't have anything that distinguished themselves from netbooks other than screen size or having 1GB of RAM. They often run the same hardware (or something that is a little better, like the AMD Neo or Intel CULV) yet are trying to distinguish themselves from netbooks. Look at 11.6" netbooks from Acer or Asus; they run a Z500 level Atom processor and pack the dreaded GMA 500 IGP. They actually feature specs that are worse than most N270+GMA 950 netbooks on the market.

I see it all as a business management process.

Only a few of us will buy the best of everything. Big market out there for the cheapest products.

All of the companies have a larger point of sale presence. They sell ten computers at every point of sale and they make the million sales they want.

The research and development presence is smaller. It looks like and feels like, to me, the companies are giving teams of 10 to 15 RnD types freedom to set targets, make compromises on hardware, set features, arrange supply contracts, define delivery dates, start production runs and develop internet buzz to keep the company running. As long as they sell for more than it cost to make computers, the company is good by developing experienced teams. Sometimes they get a big hit and grab some share.

You're doing a good job TINman to keep us informed about features or we would buy anything with a shiny cover.

It's good for us to be more informed about decisions and become better consumers. Thanks.

I need some opinion guys i have been wanting to buy a netbook since a long tym which will fulfill my requirements of a laptop but will not be as bulky & expensive as one. I had shortlisted on the dm 1-3210us since I am not much of a techie in this would really lyk ull to help me out with the same. I will jot down my requirements quickly so its easier fr ull to help me a bit. I have a desktop at work and evn a full size laptop at home so all i am going to do on this is browse, watch videos, play some games(not very high end),Ms Office, music etc.

Bcz of my use being not very heavy on the netbook i wanted one with a good battery life which doznt make me run behind a socket everytime I am travelling. Any suggestions considering my requirements is most welcome. I am looking for any neetbook under $450 and preferably a 11.6 inch.

I think the name netbook makes the gadget a bit "low-end" compared to the higher profile names. I actually don't like having a netbook because of the heavy applications that I need to run. I'd rather have the bigger and more powerful laptop and desktop combination. :-)

I would stay away from any netbook at this point and especially any netbook coming from HP in their current state. Although I\'m not to found of tablets, I think they will finish their job of eliminating netbooks within the next several months. It\'s a shame because I really enjoy my netbook.

Interesting. So netbooks have not gotten any better, and even HP is not doing a good job. ....

I have been kinda of looking at HP Mini, but it sure seems like they are not holding their value. And of course that makes me wonder.

Thanks for your post
