Default Netbook - There is no definition really.

I have had 4 netbooks. The Acer 751h (now up for sale!) The Acer 150D (sold to a freind... needed higher resolution to run certain software...) the Acer AO110 which I still own. It fits everywhere, is built well and though only 512kb, and no hdd, it runs LINUX like a bat out of heck and I love it. I take it camping.

My latest adventure with Netbooks is a Gatway LT 31. I got it for $300. It only has a 3-cell battery, and 160 gb drive. I wish that there were more user forums for Gateway because this is a great machine. It is fast, has hires video, and cheap. To me those are criteria for a netbook to me.

That being said, this thread is a great read. I think its amusing that for some people a netbook is minimalist, and for some it is a very portable Cray!

  • Have a 10-11.6" screen. Anything bigger and I might as well just carry around my tablet as it has a 13" screen.
  • Real world battery usage of about 5 hours. This is with the screen backlight set to 50-60%, bluetooth turned off, and wi-fi turned on.
  • Enough hardware to at least watch standard definition content.
  • Be sturdy enough so that I can throw the netbook in a slipcase and put that in a backpack with some books.
  • Have video conferencing software that actually works along with a built-in webcam that produces decent results. I hate sitting down to do a video conference only for the camera to produce grainy results or for the software the really compress the video stream so that everything is pixelated.

These are the features that I actually want:
  • Be able to fully playback 1080p mpeg-2, mpeg-4, mpeg-4 AVC, and VC-1 content without issues.
  • Have enough hard drive space to carry around my lossless archive of CDs (this means that it would need to have a 1TB hard drive).
  • Digital optical audio output.
  • HDMI video output.
  • A multi-gesture trackpad that uses an LCD that contains quick-launch icons for applications such as iTunes, FireFox, MS Word, etc.
  • 24 hour real world battery usage.
  • Support for 4GB of RAM so that I can run AutoCAD.
  • Come with an external Blu-ray ROM that matches the computer's casing.
  • Fingerprint reader.

One I can download from the internet for my netbook would be best!

I still haven't settled on a piece of software for video editing. Can't seem to work that out, but I HAVE figured out how to do photo editing in general....I'm using Picnik online which is NOT free though you can access their free software. I found it too limiting, so paid the sub fee and got a year's use which I think I will use for sure.

I'm not trying to be a pain, Beth...but this Video Editing topic has been talked about numerous times.

Please utilize the SEARCH feature of the forums (there are only 19 hits when searching for Video Editing) before digging up 8+ month old threads that aren't even your specific topic (video editing). There is already a nice thread dedicated to all our video editing recommendations and tips.
