Default Verizon FIOS Free netbook?

Hey all - just signed up for the Verizon FIOS service, along with getting a free netbook. Have any of you out there gotten this netbook? What can you tell me about it? How is it? Any issues? Does it play online video well, via a wireless network? Any other advice on using it?Thanks in advance for any comments!

Hey MacFry,

In general most netbooks these days don't offer great video support (at least HD video support). But are you trying to decide if you should keep it or return it perhaps?

What are the specs for that netbook? I can give you an idea of what the performance will be based on the standard Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, three-cell battery, and GMA 950 configurations out there. They will play most standard definition (SD) videos without issues. Hulu should run smoothly but you may run across some problems when playing back SD mpeg-4 AVC videos purchased from the iTunes Store. From my experience, every N270/GMA 950 netbook stutters at least once when playing back iTunes Store purchased movies/music videos/TV shows. No big deal, just know that it can happen.

You will probably get about 2-3 hours of real world performance with a three-cell battery, a six-cell battery could boost your performance up to 5-6 hours depending on the model that came with your subscription. You shouldn't have any issues running Microsoft Office and basic games (solitaire and older 3D games such as Doom and Duke Nukem) but don't expect to play much else.

Most netbooks are built to be companion PCs. This means that people purchase a netbook when they already have a more powerful notebook or desktop system. They get a netbook so that they can perform basic tasks (ie surf the internet), with ~6 hours of performance, without having to whip out their heavy duty computers.
