I think it is the best in terms of aesthetics and battery life, that is it though. The Atom N280 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 160GB hard drive are found in pretty much every other netbook out on the market today.
I have a couple of these at my disposal and am able to get about 9.5 hours of real world usage. This is with the backlight turned down to 60% (that is more than bright enough), bluetooth turned off, and wi-fi turned on. That is really good considering how sleek the 1005HA is. The processor is also throttled down but still has the option to operateThis was my netbook of choice until Gateway released their model.
So, if all you want is a netbook that can really last all day on a single charge, I can recommend this one. Gateway's netbook (with a 1.2GHz AMD Athlon 64 and ATI X1270 GPU) can outperform the Eee PC 1005HA by leaps and bounds but it can only last for about 4 hours on a single charge. You will have to weigh the most important aspect: battery life or performance.
Additionally, Acer is coming out with a new netbook running an Intel ULV processor, uses Intel's GMA 4500HD graphics solution, and can last for a posted 8 hours (which means you will get 6-7 hours of real world usage) on a single charge. Acer didn't release when that netbook was coming out or attach a price but most are expecting an August/September release along with a $450-$550 price tag.

I personally prefer the slightly lighter weight and thinner chassis offered by the Asus Eee PC 1008HA - but the 1005HA will surpass it in total sales and the battery life sure can't be beat.
Go with the 1005HA - it's a great machine.

It is a nice machine, but I would be happy with one the size of the 1000xx series, as long as it had more battery to support a faster cpu and video card. If they can make them smaller and thinner, then they can fit more into those 1000x form factors. The 1000's also could have slightly larger screens without increasing over all size.

Just a note, the Gateway netbook is 11.6 inches. Personally I draw the line at 10 inches, preference is still with the 9inch. I've had my eyes set on the 1005HA for some time now, just waiting for staples to stock it.
Any chance you have a link to the Acer netbook?

Currently, most 11.6" netbooks are less than 1/2 an inch wider than 10" netbooks. That is about it in terms os size differences. In fact, Gateway's 11.6" netbook is just as wide as a few older 10" netbooks that I have. Here is a link to the 11.6" Aspire Timeline (notice that it isn't carrying the Aspire One name). I don't know if Acer is officially calling it a netbook but it looks like one since it uses the same footprint as their Aspire One 750 netbook.

Chris, I'm confused. If you prefer the slightly lighter weight and thinner chassis offered by the Asus Eee PC 1008HA, why would you suggest he go with the 1005HA?

The 1005HA is a little thinner than the 1000HE but there are some things to give up since there are 2 variations of camera and 3 of battery. That thin front edge is going to be a little more difficult to get open. The bottom door gives access to RAM but not to a hard drive exchange. Thinner is harder to cool and the 1005HA is hotter on the left according to published reports I've read. That left side has the most space under the keyboard which is more flexible there too. It's hard to tell but I think the 1005HA is giving up trackpad space. I believe the 1005HA is a Synaptic trackpad rather than the Elantech on the 1000HE. I am definitely a fan of the stiffer, rollover 1000HE trackpad keys.
That keyboard has a nicer setup. So does the screen. It dips down behind the battery so the overall height is lower making for a better economy class tray mounted computer. Some models of the 1005HA are glossy. The 1000HE is matte.
Here is the official ASUS comparison chart.

I don't want to speak for Chris. However, I think the point that he is trying to make is that the 1005HA is less expensive than the 1008HA and is able to last all day on a single charge. Basically, the 1005HA has a slightly thicker form factor than the 1008HA, has the same hardware, and has a bigger battery all while costing about $30 less.
