Choosing a good netbook for your kids is a lot like walking on a balance beam. You need to keep everything in balance in order to be successful. It needs to be powerful enough to allow them to do their work (and enjoy a few games on the weekends) without being too expensive for your budget. Or, if your budget it a bit more relaxed, inexpensive enough that you won't be angry if it gets dropped, lost, or outgrown in a few years. Today, we are going to look at some of your best options for children's netbooks.

The Disney Netpal

Choosing the Disney Netpal means that you get a lot of control over where and when your kids browse. It comes with a very comprehensive suite of tools that give you control, and monitoring ability, over the system. Add in the suite of Disney skins and games and this is a great option for a younger child. If you have a boy, or an older child you may want to get the Blue one, instead of princess pink.

The Kids Computer Classmate

I know that the official Amazon page for this device says that it is a tablet, but take a loot at it: the full sized keyboard, the USB ports and the overall size make it much more like a convertible netbook then a tablet PC. This option is great if you happen to be raising a media lover (or if you want it to double as entertainment in the car) because it has an HD screen.

Dell White Slimed Inspiron Mini 10v Nickelodeon Edition Netbook

Dell White Slimed Inspiron Mini

This machine is as built for performance as a children's model is going to get. It has an Intel Atom processor and HD graphics. Since it is made by Dell, and has a lot of the same specs as a standard Inspiron Mini 10v, you know it will stand the test of time and be able to grow with your child for years to come. Though some time around high school don't be surprised if they are asking for a vinyl skin to cover up the green slime splatter.

There you have it. A look at three great netbooks for your kids. If you still want to do a little comparison-shopping then check out our netbook comparisons page.

It is not too expensive, at roughly $250, but the question still remains, is this offering worth even this low and reasonable price or should you choose another machine?

Let's take a look at what the ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD-EU17-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black) has to offer you. It comes equipped with an Intel Atom N455 1.66GHz processor, which is a fairly decent offering for a machine that isn't designed to be processing heavy. Its maximum memory capacity is 2GB, but it can be expanded with the help of the 2-in-1 Card Reader and an SD card. Just be aware that by default the machine comes with only 1 GB DDR3 SODIMM memory, so consider that SD card to be an essential component when you get the machine.

Sadly, there is no optical drive, and while this is not unusual for a netbook, it does limit the ways that you can read and transfer data, and if you are in a pinch on the road this may become a real issue. Though, admittedly this is not going to be a big issue in day to day use, since you will have time to prepare, and put things on a flash drive. Just be aware that the usb ports are on opposite sides of system, so if you need to use anything that requires multiple ports, such as an external optical drive, you will find yourself in need of extra accessories.

The 10 inch screen can actually deal with some pretty high definition graphics, up to 1024X600 with its LED display. Considering that HD clocks in at 1080, this is nothing to balk at. It isn't an HD display, but this is a solid resolution for handling media applications, such as streaming your favorite TV shows from Hulu while you wait in an airport, or wind down in your hotel room. The web cam is a bit of a disappointment, at only 0.3MP, but it will get you through a basic video chat.

The system comes with the Windows 7 Starter Operating System which is a mixed bag. The good news is that you can expect reliable performance and a small learning curve. The bad news is that the version of MS Office that comes with this tablet has ads in it, and you will get sick of those quickly. This model does not come with Windows Live Mail installed.

Battery life is about four hours, which is the same as the advertised specs on the system. On the whole, if you do not use CD's or DVD's that often this is a solid option for the price.

If you want, you can buy this machine at Amazon for $249.99

Bottom Line:

The Asus Eee PC 1005HA is one of the best netbooks out on the market right now. (Just look at the bestsellers list. There is a lower entry model with a smaller battery cell, no blue tooth, lower res web cam etc. at just $290.68 or you can spend $366.62 for a 6 cell battery version with all the options you will see in this review. About my only complaint is that the chassis feels a little thick, but when you're coming from a 1008HA which is only an inch thick I suppose everything looks a little too big.

View Full Specs

Full Review:

Coming from an Asus background with my netbook purchases I wouldn't say I am predisposed to writing a favorable review for future models, but because I've been so pleased with what I've purchased in the past (1000HE and currently 1008HA) I almost look at each new Asus model as a netbook that needs to raise the bar even over what the previous iterations were able to do and fortunately this netbook has done just that.

Design:

The netbook 1.4 inches tall at it's thickest point and a little under 1 inch tall at it's thinnest point. So that you can easily this difference in height I took a few pictures of the Asus Eee PC 1005HA stacked on it's more slender brother:

Obviously the reason for the size discrepancy is due to the fact that the 1005HA is using a 6 cell battery and the 1008HA has a modified unique 3 cell battery built in you can't remove. I like the way the 1005HA slants down in the front as it also makes it very comfortable to type on (almost as if it's like a desktop keyboard when you prop up the leg stands in the back). Speaking of the keyboard, it's great! I really like the chiclet style of keyboards that Asus moved to several months ago as they make typing a breeze on the 92% full size keyboards. Also, when compared to the the 1008HA the touch pad and rocker seemed a little larger (which is a good thing).

Usability

After using the Toshiba NB205's spectacular keyboard set up I can't help but feel like Asus in general has a few things to learn. I am still a little annoyed that they choose to split the up and down arrow keys into a single key spot. I found myself accidentally pressing the wrong keys on occasion. Beyond that the netbook is great. The ports are varied and easily accessible - nothing that goes beyond the netbook standard of 3 USB ports, VGA out and some form of multi-card reader, but what else do you really need? In any case, it's very easy to upgrade the RAM via the access panel on the bottom of the netbook which is a breath of fresh air *cough* 1008HA *cough*.

Battery Life

The Asus Eee PC 1005HA offers a 6 cell lithium ion battery with a 5600 mAh rating and delivers stellar battery performance. The 10.5 hours is the manufacturers claim could be possible if you reduced brightness to about 70%, turned off at least bluetooth or wifi and then used a lower performance mode. You should expect to see about 7 - 8 hours of battery life with Wi-Fi on and screen brightness set to 100% (which is how most would prefer to use it). If you don't think you need this much battery life you can still go for a mid range Asus Eee PC 1005HA with a 3 cell battery for around $330 so that's something to think about as well.

Benchmarking

Most netbooks share very similar specs but there are always some suttle variances worth pointing out, so if you must now how it performed under the wide range of tests we put it through, click here to view the full benchmarking results.

Overall Performance:

This netbook features the faster Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz processor, which is something that I expect netbook manufacturers to offer at this stage of evolution of the netbook market so there are no surprises there. The speaker quality is slightly better than what I've seen with the previous Asus netbook iterations as well as some of the other manufactures and this is due to the fact that the speakers are located more near the front of the netbook (on the bottom though of course). The netbook has 1 GB of RAM pre-installed like nearly every other netbook out there and in my past experience it doesn't alter the performance much if you upgrade the RAM because the true bottleneck is the processor and integrated graphics chipset (Intel GMA 950 in this case), but if you must to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB's you can expect slightly better multi tasking abilities. The netbook offers 802.11b/g/n which is again something I expect netbook manufactures to offer as well as a 1.3 megapixel camera.

Overall, if you want a relatively inexpensive netbook that packs the cream of the crop 10 inch netbook specs into a slightly bloated, but completely manageable framework you should look no further than the 1005HA. As I've said in the previous video comparison of the 1005HA vs the 1008HA it just comes down to what you'll use it for. If you want something for being on the road a lot definitely buy the 1005HA. If you don't mind spending a few more dollars and don't need a large battery life pick up the 1008HA. And if you are strapped for cash pick up the $290 version. Asus has another winner on their hands which is already evidenced by their continued dominance in the sales charts as well as the overall quality of their netbooks.

I had already written an Asus Eee PC 1005HA vs 1008HA comparison post but that was only based off a short time I got to handle a friends 1005HA. This time, Asus sent me a 1005HA for me to check out and here you can see a short video which compares the two:

You can read the Asus Eee PC 1008HA review now, and I will have an in depth review of the Asus Eee PC 1005HA later this month.

Update: Michael over at bestnetbookreviewz.com ran an updated ASUS netbook comparison post between the 1001p and 1005pe

Overall many of the netbooks on the top 10 list are repeat performers. The Acer Aspire One was number two last month at $319 and this month it's available for $299.99 which is a great deal for that netbook. The Samsung NC10 showed up twice in both blue at $342.84 and pink at $349.99 and the newer N120 made the list as well. But in the end, all manufacturers still have their eyes set on the Asus Eee PC 1005HA - I finally have one in my hands and will be posting a review shortly.

Which netbook do you want to buy and do you think anything can surpass the 1005HA?

I've had a Lenovo S10-2 and Lenovo S12 in hand for the past few weeks and decided to write a veriface review and post a short video on how it works. For those not in the know - Lenovo has some nifty software that allows you to log into your computer or various websites just by scanning your face. Granted, this isn't brand new technology but if you're like me and tired of remembering passwords why not let the computer remember your face instead?

Here's a video on the set up process and how quickly it works. I was very impressed and will most certainly mention this in my Lenovo netbook reviews:

If you have any questions about how this works feel free to ask them here or in the forum and I'd be happy to help clarify this technology for you. I'll be posting a comparison video between the two netbooks in the upcoming days as well as extensive reviews. (subscribe to our RSS feed if you want to read them in the coming days)

Bottom Line:

The Toshiba NB205 is a stellar netbook especially considering how new to the netbook arena Toshiba is. The NB205-N210 that I reviewed is priced around $350 and that gets you a netbook with the better Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz processor, a 6 cell battery pumping out 9 hours of battery life, a perfect keyboard and a huge touchpad. Put this all together for $350 and you have a great machine in the mid netbook price range.

Full Review:

I've owned a few different netbooks by Asus before and didn't have experience with many other manufacturers let alone something from Toshiba, a relative newcomer to the netbook market. But my early reservations were quickly pushed aside after I started using this wonderful machine.

Design:

The netbook is only 1.3 inches tall which is very thin compared to other 6 cell battery netbooks. One of the only more slender netbooks is the Asus Eee PC 1008HA. The top of the case has a lovely diagonal pattern running across the glossy black finish (this does lend itself towards gathering a lot of fingerprints).

Opening up the netbook and you'll be greeted by one of the best keyboards on a netbook yet. The keys are the largest I've seen on any netbook (besides the function keys which run a little smaller). I'll cover the keys more in the usability section of the review.

The battery sticks out of the back about an inch but it's not unsightly or excessively bulging out the bottom of the netbook like I've seen on other models. The RAM access bay is easy to get to and should make upgrading a cinch.

The plastics used in this netbook just feel more high quality than I've felt in other netbooks made by Lenovo and Asus. The Toshiba NB205 almost feels like it's a rugged netbook because of just how great the build quality is. Most impressive indeed.

Usability

As I mentioned above the keys on the Toshiba NB205 are the largest I've ever seen which naturally lends itself towards making it much easier to type on the keyboard. What makes this even better is that keys are also much more firm and responsive than those found in the Asus and Lenovo netbooks I've reviewed. I know this for sure because as I write this review I'm also using the Lenovo S10-2, Lenovo S12 and Asus Eee PC 1008HA.

There are also no awkward key placements found in the Toshiba NB205 which is a big relief. I also appreciate that they've found a way to set aside dedicated up, down, left and right arrow keys with proper spacing and size. When using a netbook I find myself constantly reaching for these keys to scroll up and down web pages due to the lower resolution screens and not trying to cram these into the design is a nice touch. Also by setting aside these arrow keys it creates a space above and to the right for the page down and page up arrows which is a more natural feel than other netbooks that set the keys to the left and right of the up arrow key.

The Toshiba NB205 has the largest touchpad I've ever seen on a netbook. It's 3 inches wide and 1 and 5/8ths inches tall. The closest touchpad I've seen to this side was 2.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches tall so that gives you an idea of just how much larger this beast is - all on a netbook! This makes it even easier to maneuver the cursor around the screen and take advantage of multi-touch features.

Battery Life

The Toshiba NB205 offers a 6 cell lithium ion battery with a 5800 mAh rating and delivers a stellar battery performance. While 9 hours is the manufacturers claim, I only could reach 8 hours which was accomplished while running at 60% brightness, wireless active and on the normal mode for battery life. This is one of the many standout features of this well priced netbook and because it doesn't feature bluetooth this also helps to provide a better battery life.

Benchmarking

In the past I had not done a lot of benchmarking in previous reviews; however, to provide you with more data I will be covering benchmarking test results moving forward with all reviews. Click here to view full benchmarking results. With that said, because most netbooks share similar tech specs the results are often nearly the same so feel free to continue reading on to see my overall impressions on the netbook.

Overall Performance:

This netbook features the faster Intel Atom N280 1.66 GHz processor, so it's slightly faster than most of the other netbooks out there and this processor is usually not found in netbooks at this price point. The speakers are nothing to talk about, you can hear them when sitting nearby the netbook but don't expect to use this in a house party . The netbook has 1 GB of RAM pre-installed just like nearly every other netbook and if you want to upgrade the RAM to 2 GB's you can expect slightly better multi tasking abilities. I suggest that if you don't need bluetooth you should buy this version to save yourself some money, but if you want bluetooth you'll need to go for the N205-N310 model instead. The netbook also only offers 802.11b/g and doesn't go a step further offering draft N like some of the other competing netbooks have offered. Combine this with a weaker .3 megapixel webcam and annoying Norton bloatware and you can see where the Toshiba NB205 has managed to save a few dollars which have thankfully been applied to a lower end user price.

Overall, I believe this is a stellar entry into Toshiba's relatively new line of netbooks. If you're in the market for a new netbook and want to save money where possible you should seriously consider Toshiba's NB205 netbook.

CPUz 1.52: The processor is an Intel N280 processor at 1.66 GHz. I noticed that by toggling through the performance settings, Full Power, High Power, Normal, DVD Playback, Presentation and Low Power this did not scale down the processor's speed. Instead it simply reduced the brightness in the screen. I thought that perhaps on High Power it would overclock the CPU a tad, but it did not.

As July comes to a close we finally have a new victor as the bestselling netbook in July - the Asus Eee PC 1005HA. Currently priced at $378, the Asus Eee PC 1005HA with a 10.5 hour battery life is the new champion. In May and June it has been the Asus Eee PC 1000HE all the way ($374.95 right now). I made a prediction last month the the Asus Eee PC 1005HA would take over the number one spot and sure enough it came true but it's amazing that the 1005HA appears 4 times in the top 10! I'm also surprised by just how quickly the Asus Eee PC 1008HA has fallen out of contention (currently located in the 24th spot at $415.98).

2. Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10.1-Inch Sapphire Blue Netbook - 6.5 Hour Battery Life $319.99 (Amazing deal!)
10. ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-VU1X-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 8.5 Hour Battery Life $338.62

I know sometimes I talk about the Asus netbooks too often; however, this is partly because they're continuous best sellers and I've owned a few of them now. But I want to spend a few moments to point out the other highlights from the list. The Acer Aspire One AOD150 for $319.99 is an absolutely amazing price on a great brand and netbook. If you're buying a netbook on price alone go with this one. The Toshiba NB205 is also a notable addition at number 5 for $348.99. If you're buying a netbook strictly on price and want a better battery life too - buy the Toshiba Mini NB205.

Overall, it's an exciting time to be a netbook shopper right now. You can get an amazing netbook with a stellar 10 hour battery life (MFG) for less than $400 and it will have all the qualities of a more expensive laptop. If you want to read more netbook reviews, see hands on video impressions and stay up to date on the latest with netbooks - subscribe to our RSS feed. Surprisingly no 9 inch or 11.6 inch netbooks were on the top ten list for this month. Perhaps we'll see the Lenovo S12 or the new Asus Eee PC T91 tablet next month?

I've spent a little time playing around with an Asus Eee PC 1005HA that my friend purchased so while I won't be able to do a full review until I get my unit from Asus I do have enough experience to write an educated comparison post.

Bottom Line:

Bottom line both of these netbooks are great machines. They feature higher end netbook specs when compared to their competitors at similar prices. However, after I spent some time with them I've decided the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA is the winner unless you want maximum portability. The ability to upgrade the RAM and purchase an option with a 6 cell battery for less than $400 is huge. If you can get by with 6 hours of battery life (light use) between charges and want the absolute thinnest and lighest netbook possible, buy the Asus Eee PC 1008HA. The Asus Eee PC 1008HA is lighter than the Asus Eee PC 1005HA's 6 cell variant and the same weight as the $340 3 cell version. If you're still on the fence read the Asus Eee PC 1008HA review and browse the new netbook forum for more impressions on the Asus Eee PC 1005HA (I'll have a full review soon).
