    Asus Eee PC 1201N up for pre-order

    Finally, the Asus Eee PC 1201N is up for pre-order at $499.99:

    Asus-Eee-PC-1201n

    This is the 12.1 inch answer to the HP Mini 311 and Lenovo S12 (Ion version). Available in black or silver and shipping on January 15th this is what you'll get for the $499.99 price:

    * 1.6GHz Intel Atom Dual Core N330 Processor
    * 2GB DDR2 RAM, 2 x SODIMM Slot, 8GB Max
    * 250GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM) + 500GB Free Web Storage;
    * NVidia ION Platform
    * Windows 7 Home Premium Operating System (32 Bit)
    * Bluetooth; Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n; 0.3MP Webcam; Free Sleeve Case
    * Size (LWH): 11.65 inches, 8.19 inches, 1.31 inches
    * Weight: 3.21 pounds

    The most exciting features in this netbook include the Intel Atom Dual Core N330 and Nvidia ION. I personally think this could give the HP Mini 311 and the Lenovo S12 a run for the 12 inch netbook market, but we'll have to wait for when my review model arrives weeks ahead of the official release date. As always, I'll have a detailed review of this netbook as soon as I can get my hands on it.

    1. I wonder what the battery life is like with the dual core processor? I guess we’ll have to wait and see for some real-world testing.

      There“s a quite interesting test on this issue:

      http://www.blogeee.net/2009/12/test-asus-eeepc-seashell-1201n-performances-et-autonomie/

      Written in french, unfortunately, but easy to understand battery life results: at “normal usage” (i.e. internet, WiFi on, 100% brightness) the battery life was 4:45 h! Pretty impressive. I was/am close to buying the Lenovo S12 ION, but if those results are confirmed by others…

      The dual core is great. Single-core Atom processors can’t keep up with Ion. Even with Ion taking the load on a lot of media, a single core Atom still is rather easy to over-burden. Dual-core implementations are much smoother.

      I love the price, too. $499? Sometimes I wish I jumped on the bandwagon a bit later, since I paid $420 for my NC10. But I guess that is always the case with new technology.
