ASUS Eee PC 1005PR Shipping Without Broadcom Crystal HD?

The ASUS Eee PC 1005PR began shipping from Amazon late last week and because of the HD 1366 x 768 resolution screen and Broadcom Crystal HD chip it combines too elements missing in most netbooks (high res screen and improved support for HD video and games). Combine these two factors and a price coming in at just under $400 and I believe it's a recipe for success. In fact, I would buy this netbook if it weren't for the fact that I already own a netbook and laptop. Today I was looking at the reviews on Amazon when I noticed something surprising.

Customers are claiming to have received ASUS Eee PC 1005PR netbooks that were physically missing the Broadcom Crystal HD chipset:

I've contacted ASUS and am waiting for an update. In the past ASUS has been great with customer support from the times I've called in, so my assumption is that this is a manufacturing oversight and they are going to either install the chipset on units missing them or replace the whole netbook entirely. Again this is just an assumption and I'll update this post once I have confirmation on what really happened.

May 12th 11:38 AM PST Update: I've received a response back from ASUS but it's still not definitive about the scope / scale of the potential problem. I should have official word back tomorrow or perhaps later today.

Check Newegg’s reviews. They’re reporting the same problem.

It’s been a month for them to address the problem, but I just got one with the same failure.
