Asus Eee PC 1000HE vs Asus Eee PC 1008HA

I believe the two best Asus netbooks out at this time are the Asus Eee PC 1000HE and the Asus Eee PC 1008HA. Dare I say they are the two best netbooks by any company? Well, we can leave that up for debate, but in all my research and hands on experience I've found them to be amazing. I've owned both and wanted to take some time to compile a comparison sheet for these two netbooks to do battle against each other.

    How they stack up:

    Bottom Line:

Bottom line both of these netbooks are great machines. They feature higher end netbook specs when compared to their competitors and are all around great machines. If you plan to travel a lot without access to power outlets or a charging station buy the Asus Eee PC 1000HE for the greater battery life and ability to swap out batteries. If you can get by with 6 hours of battery life (light use) between charges then spend the extra $30 and buy the Asus Eee PC 1008HA. The Asus Eee PC 1008HA is 25% lighter than the Asus Eee PC 1000HE (.8 pounds) and half an inch thinner so the sleek design adds another great reason to go with the Asus Eee PC 1008HA. If you're still on the fence read the Asus Eee PC 1008HA review and the Asus Eee PC 1000HE review.

I’d add at least one more point of comparison: keyboard. The 1008HA is the _first_ Asus netbook with a keyboard that has a correctly sized Shift keys – very important to us touch typists who don’t like to look at the keyboard when they type! At the same time it may be the best keyboard on _any_ netbook out there.

    2. Chris says:

Good point Wolfie. I mentioned that in my review but found it hard to fit that into the comparison table. Next time I’ll try and mention more specific differences.

Thanks for the heads up on this one though.

    3. Joseph says:

Hi Chris, which of these are faster for running games, I mean which got the better graphics between the 1008HA and the 1000HE

    4. Chris says:

      Hey Joseph,

Actually they have the same graphics card. Integrated GMA 950. So they would be the same.

      Which are you leaning towards?

    5. Joseph says:

Well im maybe looking forward the 1008HA

    6. Joseph says:

Should I wait for one in particular that will come out of I should get this one asap ??

    7. Rick says:

One difference not noted that troubles me is the ability to upgrade the ram. On the HE you can upgrade the ram to 2G for about $25 by removing a simple panel. For that matter, you could drop in a 500G HD for about $100 if you needed the space. That might be useful storage for digital photography. The HA is sealed up tight. You can replace the ram by voiding the warranty and reading 3 Chinese websites but I am not sure that I want to put in that effort…

    8. TOMER says:

first, excuse me about my english!
if i understand correctly, in the brief specs of the Eee PC 1005HA (which i assume was posted later to this comparison),appears an option of replaceable battery with 10.5 of use hours.
if that’s correct, don’t we have an obvious winner? does the Eee PC 1005HA combines the best of the Asus Eee PC 1000HE & Asus Eee PC 1008HA?

or did i miss something? perhaps the replaceable battery will add “missing” the weight?

thanks. (by the way, you may also check{and correct} my english).

    9. TOMER says:

sorry, i meant – “will add the “missing” weight?”

    10. Chris says:

      Hey Tomer,

I’m going to do a comparison post between the Asus Eee PC 1005HA and the Asus Eee PC 1008HA as soon as I have a 1005HA in my hands.

The 1008HA is thinner and lighter than the 1005HA, so even though the 1005HA is still sleek in my opinion it’s not as sexy as the 1008HA.

I’ll share more in the full post.

      Which one do you want?

(Your English is fine by the way :) )

    11. TOMER says:

      wow! you’re quick!!!

in the first link (#1) on your 1005HA update, it is written that one configuration of it has a 10.5 hours of battery life and weights 1.27 kg…i think it’s the best “trade of” between weight and battery life (still don’t know about the wind u115).
so,back to your qustion, if that’s the case, i”ll prefer the 1005 on the 1008 because
      1) i don’t care much about aesthetics…
2)to my ears, unreplaceable battery doesn’t sound like a safe idea .

thanks for the “speed of light reply”!

    12. TOMER says:

      another question:
one of the key reasons that i always prefered the eee pc’s on the msi wind, is the size and functionality of the touch pad…
in the new “shell” eee’s, it looks like asus reduced its size, don’t they?

if they do, i”ll have to compare the msi wind u 115 to the Asus Eee PC 1005HA on battery life, weight and touch pad functionality – these are the most crucial categories to my opinion.

    13. Joseph says:

Me I need a netbook with a good resolution !!!!!!!! I tried my moms HP Mini 1135CA but the resolution of 1024×537 is just too weird and some programs crashes because of that…….. but thats one NICE netbook :P !!!

    14. TOMER says:

hey chris, i read your eee pc 1008HA review…can you please add details about the touch pad and compare it to the one on the eee pc 1000HE? (multi touch ,size and whatever you consider to affect the functionality – and after you spent some time with “the new texture” – what is your verdict about it?)

      thanks anyway.

    15. David says:

When will you do a three-way comparison between Asus Eee PC 1000HE vs Asus Eee PC 1008HA vs Asus Eee PC 1005HA ??

    16. Chris says:

      Hey David,

To be honest I don’t think I could fit all three on the same page :D

Nah, but in all seriousness. The next comparison post I’ll be doing is of the 1005HA vs the 1008HA

The 1000HE is slowly going to be phased out by Asus in favor of the 1005HA.

    17. TOMER says:

      hey chris,

did you read my last post? i noticed you answered david and ignored me… (-:

i considered my request an easy one, doesn’t it?

    18. Chris says:

Tomer, I didn’t notice much of a difference in multi touch capabilities between the two; however, I prefer the touch pad on the 1008HA and it’s also easier to click the buttons below the touchpad on the 1008HA. I found the buttons on the 1000HE too stiff.

    19. TOMER says:

i think that one critical issue on a netbook, is that you don’t want to carry anything else besides the the device itself –
i don’t want to carry an extra battery, not a charger with its wires (that’s why i’m willing to sacrifice the “extra” 200 gr’ for the eee1000he) and definitely not an external mouse. thats why i need my touchpad to be functional as close as it can to a mouse.

i’m surprised that most of the reviews i read (not only in here), don’t give much of focus on that point, besides telling if the touchpad is smaller or larger than another netbook the reviewer tried earlier.

    20. Prof J C Nash says:

I’ve had a Eee 1005 HA for a couple of weeks. Some serious woes in that WinXP reboots or locks often — as far as I can tell due to antivirus scans. I’ve tried 4 different AV tools and all do it. Linux is rock solid, but only very recent kernels (i.e., not current yet — Ubuntu 9.10 alpa) have drivers.

To see if there was some problem with the s/w, I tried a system restore from DVD and … got a msg that the image was corrupted! So now no XP at all at all at all. Thinking of going all-Linux, but there may be some issues of tools to turn wireless on and off.

Would be willing to share experiences with others.

    21. Theo says:

Does the 1005 HA have a longer life battery available. I see adds for a 10.5 hr battery model “ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook – 10.5 Hour Battery Life”. Also , withoput a dvd drive how do you transfer big files etc i.e watch movies??
